Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is Ethiopian Airlines’ primary hub and gateway to the rest of the country and region. Agents can highlight the city’s blend of modern services and cultural heritage. When booking trips or a stop-over in Addis, suggest customers explore the National Museum of Ethiopia, where they can see the famous fossil, ‘Lucy’. The bustling Mercato market is one of the largest open-air markets in the area.

A day trip to the Entoto Mountains is highly recommended for an adventurous itinerary. The area is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of the city and offers stunning panoramic views of Addis Ababa, but what truly sets Addis Ababa apart are its unique cultural experiences. From traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies to dining at a local restaurant serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine, including homemade injera, a type of spongy flatbread that’s delicious with various stews, your clients are in for a treat.

As the country’s economic center and home of the African Union, Addis Ababa is also a thriving business hub. It’s a perfect destination for business travel, conferences, and meetings. Leaving the city’s Bole International Airport, a central transport point for international travel, corporate customers will find easy access to a good mix of excellent hotel accommodation and local transport options.

Bahir Dar

Bahir Dar, in the northwest of Ethiopia, is known for its beautiful scenery. A short flight from Addis Ababa, the destination’s biggest drawcard is arguably Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia.

With ancient monasteries on the lake’s islands, like Ura Kidane Meheret and Kibran Gebriel, visitors can ease into their surroundings while exploring the country’s rich religious history. Nearby, Blue Nile Falls, also known as Tis Issat, is another popular excursion.

Trip planners suggest two to three days in Bahir Dar, including a mix of cultural and outdoor activities, from vibrant markets to local restaurants. Bahir Dar is also regarded as a safe destination, with guides describing friendly locals and enriching experiences.

While international visitor numbers are not as high as cities like Addis Ababa and Lalibela, Bahir Dar is increasingly recognised for its unique offerings and adventure opportunities.  Overall, it is becoming an essential stop on the itineraries of those exploring Ethiopia.

Lalibela

Known for its incredible rock-hewn churches, Lalibela in northern Ethiopia is often called the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World.’ This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-visit for any itinerary focussed on Ethiopia, especially for travellers interested in history and culture.

Located approximately 600 kilometres north of Addis Ababa, Lalibela is a short domestic flight (about 1h15) making it an easy, feasible extension for business and leisure travellers.

Trip planners recommend spending two to three days in Lalibela to fully explore the 11 ancient stone churches. Guided tours are available to deepen visitors’ understanding of the site and its religious significance.

Beyond the churches, holidaymakers can enjoy day trips to immerse themselves in local life, exploring remote villages, hiking trails, Lalibela’s market, and delicious local flavours.
